2010 Contest
SunWise is again teaming up with the SHADE Foundation of America and WeatherBug Schools to put on the 2010 SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest in all 50 states and territories. More than 80,000 students have participated in the contest since it began seven years ago. Their original, creative posters have suggested ways to prevent skin cancer and raise sun safety awareness. Examples of prevention and awareness tips presented on the posters include:
- using sunscreen
- wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- seeking shade when the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- covering up with full-length clothing to protect one’s skin
- checking the UV Index
New this year, contest entries will be judged in two categories: kindergarten through third grade, and fourth through eighth grade. Entries should be on an 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper and be attached to an official entry form (available at http://www.shadefoundation.org/programs/poster-contest
). In addition to state prizes, national prizes* this year will include:
Kindergarten through 3rd grade:
- Crayola Digital Camera Scrapbooking Kit for top five entries
Fourth through 8th grade:
- A family trip to Disney World for the national contest winner
- A WeatherBug Tracking Station for the winner’s school, with lifetime access to WeatherBug Achieve. The Tracking Station is a scientific-grade weather station which records 27 different weather measurements in real time, and WeatherBug Achieve is a web-based, award-winning curriculum that integrates Station data for an interactive, collaborative classroom experience.
* Prizes are subject to change. Some states have additional prizes.
Bob Varney, then EPA New England Regional Administrator, joined SHADE Foundation founders Shonda and Curt Schilling at Boston's Fenway Park in 2008 to celebrate the six New England winners. Read the Press Release.
